Our Vision
Icarus strives to develop the world's most advanced, proactively adaptive and genuinely sustainable source of energy.
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.”
– Dr. Theodor Seuss Geisel
Conventional Geothermal
Geothermal has been around since the early 1900’s and accounts for over 15 Gigawatts of power. This represents < 0.05% of the world’s power.
- Reservoirs of hot water, existing at varying temperatures and depths below the Earth’s surface, are accessed through drilled wellbores.
- The hot fluid is recovered at surface and sent through a turbine before it is pumped back into the geothermal reservoir to be reheated.
The Problem
Environment
Toxic fluids containing many chemicals like sulfur dioxide, arsenic, and other pollutants are pumped to the surface.
Sustainability
Underground water aquifers can quickly become depleted without an adequate understanding of the reservoir.
Location Dependent
Very few locations contain the perfect recipe of temperature, rock properties, reservoir depth, and natural fluid.
Maintenance
Corrosion, scaling, and erosion due to the fluid physically touching the rock mean there are many costly unknowns.
Economics
High upfront costs for reservoir evaluation and drilling, paired with high levels of risk and continual maintenance create tight margins.
Subsurface Instability
Continued maintenance practices, such as hydraulic fracturing, have been linked to earthquakes.
A New Geothermal
Icarus’ patented system has been specifically engineered to address each problem associated with conventional geothermal systems.
Our Solution
One-for-One
The system is 100% sustainable as only heat is removed from the geothermal reservoir. For every one gallon of fluid pumped we receive one gallon back at surface.
What Goes Down Comes Back Up
With the closed-loop method, there is no flow path for downhole pollutants to reach the surface eliminating all environmental concerns.
Clean, Clean, Clean
Removing the need to communicate with the rock will also mean that unwanted minerals and chemicals from the surrounding underground environment will never contact the working fluid, dramatically reducing maintenance costs.
There is Heat Everywhere
It is simply only a matter of how deep to the heat! As our system removes many of the requirements needed for a conventional geothermal reservoir, it can be deployed anywhere.
No Shaking Here
By eliminating the need for hydraulic fracturing and the use of reservoir fluid, all known factors currently linked to artificial earthquakes are gone!
Economics
There are over 1 million active wells in the U.S. alone. As the construction phase more closely matches those of the Oil & Gas industry, the installation costs are lower as the cost of the exploration phase can be reduced by using offset information.
Investors of Tomorrow
Icarus is in the early stages of development, and looking for like minded individuals to work with us in developing our game changing, patent-pending, technology. Together, we can make Geothermal the truly sustainable solution for generations to come.
