Water is our world's most precious resource. Icarus' patented system protects our world's freshwater systems by engineering multiple barriers of cement and casing.

Cement

High strength cement is placed as the first barrier to ensure no communication to the water aquifer will occur.

Working Fluid

Our system is specifically designed to minimize risk by using water as the primary base working fluid for heat extraction.

Casing

Special steel tubing, known as casing, is used as a secondary barrier in the protection of the local water aquifer.

Bringing the heat to the surface

One of the many challenges for closed-loop geothermal systems is getting as much heat out of the ground as possible. This means special measures must been taken to ensure minimal heat is lost as the working fluid is transported from the hot rock back to the surface.

Engineered Cement

Similar to the technology used to protect the water table, a specially designed, proprietary cement sheath is placed around the vertical casing to minimize heat loss as the hot fluid travels up the wellbore.

Insulated Casing

Relative to many common materials, heat passes through steel very easily. Due to this, a cutting-edge casing solution is implemented to further reduce heat loss to the cooler sections of the wellbore.

Collecting the heat beneath our feet

Recent advancements in directional drilling have created a new world of exploration where larger volumes of hot rock can be exposed in a fashion that traditional vertical wellbores could not.

Flow Rates

The speed at which the working fluid is circulated around the wellbore is autonomously controlled and optimized to maximize heat collection, heat returned to surface, and reduce pump power required.

Production Cement

Unlike the cement sheaths placed uphole, a new proprietary cement blend is utilized to increase the ability to collect heat from the rock.

Lateral Length

Icarus experts meticulously design and plan the length of the lateral wellbore by considering a variety of different factors, such as: friction pressures, drilling tools, wellbore tortuosity, power plant capacity, and formation.

Digital twinning

An advanced modeling and analytics platform paired a real-time sensor suite is used to create a digital twin. This data is used to further research and development, refine production efficiencies, and support academic endeavors.
